Bioscope Entertainment.—On Monday evening an enjoyable entertainment, consisting of bioscopic films of Thomas’s pictures, was given in the Institute Hall under the direction of Mr. A. Rook. There was a crowded attendance, and although the prices were only 2/6, 1/, and 6d. the takings were £32 16/. The star film was that depicting the Melbourne Cup of 1909. It was a good film showing the crowd, the start, and the finish. Some other pictures, the best of which were “The highwaymen,” “Dog smugglers,” “The aspirator,” “Peter’s pranks,” were also shown. Some fine songs by Madame Melba, Mr. Peter Dawson, and Mr. Evan Williams were also given through the agency of Mr. H. Hammer’s concert grand gramophone. Before the close Mr. Rook, announced that the attendance that evening was larger than it was at any of the people’s concerts. The whole of the profits would be devoted to charity—for Christmas cheer for the deserving and aged poor—and he hoped to be able to hand over about £15 to the editor of the “Border Watch” for distribution. (Applause.) Mr. Rook is to be complimented for arranging a concert in aid of such a deserving cause.
